DIT modules come to life on CourseWise

21st September 2010
Over the past year, every Head of School and every Programme Chair has been involved in developing a new online module catalogue for DIT. Working with Professor Noirin Hayes, the Learning, Teaching and Technology Centre (LTTC) and a small team of colleagues have documented a majority of DIT modules and programmes and have created CourseWise, which is now live, and available for all staff and students to view at www.dit.ie/coursewise .
What is CourseWise?
CourseWise is a single source of information on DIT programmes and modules validated to run in this academic year. The information includes Programme descriptions; lists of all modules on each programme; a complete description of the module including its aims, learning outcomes, assessment and reading lists. All programme and module descriptions on CourseWise will now be the definitive version, and information produced in other formats, including the DIT prospectus, will be based on the approved content online. This will ensure consistency and clarity, and will also ensure that those providing module and programme information will only need to do so once.
Who can use CourseWise?
CourseWise provides information that will be invaluable to everyone in DIT - academic staff; administrative staff; and current students. For example:
- Every member of staff can use CourseWise to find programmes and review modules
- Any member of academic staff designing a new programme can now access the validated modules in DIT and may incorporate existing modules into their new programme or can create a new module that is not currently offered in DIT. That new module then becomes available for others to consider for their programmes.
- Programme Chairs will be able to use the Catalogue for updating and refining modules following annual programme reviews
- College administrators and School secretaries can check CourseWise for up to date information on programmes
- Registered students can access CourseWise for full information about their programme and module content, and where applicable, can review their choice of modules
Audiences outside DIT can also access significant information on CourseWise. For example,
- Guidance Counsellors advising students on their choice of programme can use information on CourseWise to more fully explain what is involved in a particular programme, including the list of modules and their descriptions
- Prospective students and parents can also access CourseWise to see programme descriptions, the list of modules for each programme, a description of each module and its aims. Information about learning outcomes , module content and assessment is not accessible at this stage to external audiences.
When is information on CourseWise updated?
The information currently on CourseWise was approved by Schools and Programme Chairs and is fixed and final for the 2010/2011 academic year. If you identify any errors or omissions in information relating to your programme content, please contact the CourseWise team at coursewise@dit.ie
When can new information be included?
Members of academic staff wishing to develop new programme and module information can do so at any time. Shortly details will be sent to you giving password access to a CourseWise ‘Staging Server’. Guidelines on the use of this facility - where you can make changes to current information or add new information - will also be made available. This information will then go live at the end of this academic year and will become valid for 2011/2012.
How can you access CourseWise?
From Monday 20th September, you can access CourseWise from the link on the www.dit.ie homepage; from the prominent button on www.mydit.ie and via the smartphone App created by Campus Life to enable students to find essential DIT services easily from their phones.
