DIT's Dr. Fergus Ryan appointed vice-chair of 'One Family', the association for one parent families in Ireland
01 March 2004 Dr. Fergus Ryan, Acting Head of DIT's Department of Legal Studies, and Family Law expert, has taken up the mantle as Vice-Chairperson of the recently re-launched 'One Family', the association of one parent families in Ireland. Progressing the work of Cherish, established in 1972, One Family provides voice, support and action for one-parent families through membership, professional services and campaigning. Its aim is to affect positive change and achieve equality and social inclusion for all one-parent families in Ireland.
At the launch of the new organisation on Monday 1st March, fellow DIT lecturer and family law expert Geoffrey Shannon called for a comprehensive overhaul of Irish law with a view to extending legal recognition and support to all families, whether based on marriage or
not. "The time is now ripe to consider changing the law to facilitate a broader and more inclusive definition of the family in a manner that will promote and foster the best interests of children" said Shannon.
