DIT PhD Student to study on elite Space Studies Program
Mark Wylie, currently studying a PhD in bio-mechanical engineering in DIT, will be travelling to Spain this summer to study on an elite Space Studies Program.
Mark, who is 24, was awarded a scholarship from the European Space Agency, the International Space University and DIT, who will fund the 17,000€ cost of the two month program. He will be joining 110 students to train in disciplines such as engineering and physical sciences with workshops in medicine, robotics, communication, astrophysics and telecommunication. Mark is particularly excited about the prospect of zero gravity simulations and is hoping to cover enough modules to gain a Masters by the end.
Mark revealed recently that he would like to be one of the first Irish men in space or work in a related field. He is putting his PhD on Therapeutic Ultrasound on hold to pursue this dream with the full support of DIT.
DIT hosts a Magical Science and Engineering show for STEPS to Engineering
This May the Engineering Faculty hosted a morning of Magical Science and Engineering shows for STEPS to Engineering. Over 300 primary school children crammed into the campus at Bolton Street to be entertained, amazed and excited about Science. To see photos click here
Tailor-made VW training big success in Asia - Pacific
Derek Colley, DIT Lecturer in Light Vehicle Body Repair, currently delivers tailor-made courses for Volkswagen Ireland. After a recommendation by the Irish distributor to Volkswagen Singapore, he was invited to deliver specific training on the VW EOS in Auckland, New Zealand in early 2008. Read More...

Ciaran McElroy, apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic in the Engineering Faculty, DIT, won the overall Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport's Business Innovator of the Year 2008 with his Safety Brake Device. Read more about the award and Ciaran's design here
CPD Evening - 'Lighting Design for Sports Stadia'
The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers Republic of Ireland Region and The Society of Light and Lighting present a CPD Evening Lecture at DIT Kevin Street, on Thursday 10th April 2008 at 6.00pm. The speakers on the night are:

The lecture will look at contemporary lighting systems for sports stadia including the system in Croke Park.
Huu Chi Tran
Huu Chi Tran joined Thorn Lighting in 1970 and was Professor of Lighting Technology at The Saigon School of Technology and Architecture from 1972 to 1982
His memberships include - CEN European Light and Lighting and The French Lighting Association and the French Lighting Standard Association.
As well as complex industrial projects such at tunnels and airport projects over his career Huu Chi has been involved in the design of over 40 major sports lighting projects worldwide.
Project include The Telstra Stadium Sydney, Super Bowl XLI in Miami, the worlds largest lit Horse Racing Track in Ryadh and the largest lit Golf Course in Asia in Shenzen China as well as Wembley Stadium in London and Croke Park in Dublin.
Mark graduated form DIT in 2006 with a Degree in Electrical Services Engineering. He has a Diploma in Light and Lighing from the South Bank University and works as a Design Engineer for ARUP Consulting Engineers.
Mark won the prestigious International Young Lighters Award for his paper on Stadia Flood Lighting in 2007.

Role Model Day for girls in engineering 2008
For the past two years the Faculty of Engineering of the Dublin Institute of Technology has been running a Role Model Day for women in engineering. Previous attendees have found it extremely informative and have gone on to become engineering students at DIT.
STEPS to Engineering are holding a seminar entitled 'Engineering as a Career' on Wednesday 23rd January in DIT, Bolton Street. Information on all engineering disciplines will be provided to students on the day.

Top scores for DIT structural engineering graduate
Mr John Wickham, Graduate of the Degree in Structural Engineering in 1999 achieved the highest mark in the world in the Concrete Design Question in the 2007 Institution of Structural Engineers' Chartered Membership Examination. He was awarded the Institution of Structural Engineers' A E Wynn Prize 2007 in recognition of his achievement. This is the second time in recent years that a graduate of the Degree in Structural Engineering has won this award. Mr Peter Brunner won the A E Wynn Prize in 2005.

Professor Michael Davis of the Illinois Institute of Technology recently spoke at DIT Bolton St on the topic of "Teaching Ethics to Engineers". He addressed issues such as the scope of engineering ethics, models for teaching ethics and good practice in this area. More information

The Engineers Eye
New Radio Show on RTE 1
24 September 2007The Engineers Eye, a new show on RTE Radio 1 produced in association with Engineers Ireland, aims to heighten the public profile engineering and to showcase the diversity of engineering in Ireland. The series will begin on September 24th with a trip Mulkear River in east Limerick where Charted Engineer, Tim Joyce will speak about the Cappamore flood relief scheme completed by the OPW. 120 years of Engineering Literature at your fingertips

The DIT Library Service announced that it has purchased a licence to the Engineering Index Backfile, which, in combination with the DIT subscription to Ei Compendex, will provide users with access to the last 120 years of engineering literature.

The National Institute of Transport and Logistics (NITL) was established to promote the development of supply chain expertise in Irish businesses in 1998. It was announced this week the successful unit is to move within the Faculty of Engineering in order to further develop its profile and expertise.
DIT engineering research creates revolution in music education

The Irish Times reports how researchers with the Department of Control Systems and Electrical Engineering at DIT have invented a tool to extract any given instrument from a music CD, taking it back to the individual track laid down in the studio. The tool also has potential application in satellites, biomedical applications and mobile phones. They are also working on new software to help students learn a piece of music, which should come as a relief to budding musicians everywhere!
DIT celebrates 50 years of Excellence in Engineering EducationApril 2007
This year, 2007, marks The Golden Jubilee of Professional Engineering Education at the Bolton Street Campus of The Dublin Institute of Technology. Fifty years ago, in 1957, the first graduating class of engineers was eligible to join professional societies. To celebrate, the Faculty of Engineering at DIT will hold a series of events throughout the year.
